Mara and Alex’s wedding took place at New Tree Ranch in Healdsburg, California, surrounded by family who traveled in for a weekend of quiet celebration. As a Healdsburg wedding photographer, this is the kind of setting where everything slows down in a good way.
New Tree Ranch Ceremony in the Barn Villa Gardens
The ceremony was held in the gardens at Barn Villa. Guests sat in a circle beneath an arbor, creating a feeling of closeness that shaped the entire experience. Nothing felt distant. Everyone was part of it.
Mara was calm in a steady, grounded way. Tears came easily during the ceremony, from siblings, parents, and the couple themselves.
Design, Details, and Farm-Inspired Storytelling
The wedding design was deeply connected to the property itself. Florals were sourced and designed through New Tree Ranch, using what was growing on the land. The invitation suite featured watercolor illustrations of the ranch, including the Highland cows that have become part of its visual identity.
Mara’s connection to animals came through naturally here, especially with the Highland cows nearby. With help from her stepfather, we were able to safely bring them into the portrait story, which added a layer of personality that couldn’t be staged.
Even the owner’s golden retrievers made a brief appearance, which somehow fit perfectly into the tone of the day.
Sunset Portraits in the Pasture (Highland Cows + Golden Light)
As the sun dropped, we moved into the pastures near the stables for portraits. This part of New Tree Ranch feels more open and unstructured compared to the gardens.
The Highland cows nearby, the warm light, and the stillness of the couple created one of my favorite parts of the day.
This is where the shift to slower work happened. Less direction. More observation.
Hybrid Film + Digital Approach
The day was photographed using a hybrid of medium format film and digital. Digital supported the flow of the ceremony and earlier moments, while film became the natural choice at sunset.
Portra 400 worked especially well with the late spring light and the pastel tones in the garden and pasture. It encouraged a slower rhythm and a more intentional way of seeing.
